Tårup Dark Sky 2023

Throughout human history, our ancestors experienced a sky full of twinkling stars – a night sky that inspired science, religion, philosophy, art and literature. The starlit sky has united us with nature and given us new knowledge. The night sky is a projection screen for big questions, existential wonder, dreams and longing. Who are we and where are we going? However,  in many places in the world the starry sky is no longer visible to us. In 2016, a study showed that a third of humanity can no longer see the Milky Way, and that as much as 83% of all people live under a "light-polluted" sky.

Tårup Dark Sky was a recent addition to the Nordic art and science festival scene, initially organized by Kunstrum Fyn, drawing its inspiration from the enveloping darkness of the night sky. During the festival, art experiences were offered both outdoors and indoors, complemented by a rich array of scientific discussions and presentations, all underscored by a commitment to sustainability.

The festival showed a diverse program, featuring exhibitions such as "The Universe," alongside public art installations, performances, film screenings, concerts, guided pod-walks, workshops, night strolls, as well as lectures and seminars. Artists hailing from the Nordic region were specifically invited to craft site-specific projects, engaging closely with the surrounding landscape. Concurrently, scientists and scholars were welcomed to impart their expertise and recent findings through various interactive sessions, fostering dialogue with participating artists and their creations.

Through Tårup Dark Sky, Kunstrum Fyn aimed to foster meaningful exchanges between art, science, nature, and individuals, envisioning a collaborative effort towards a sustainable trajectory for our shared future.
